Kim, an artist assistant putting finishing touches on the lotus
Grand Avenue Club (GAC) is a little known gem in Milwaukee's downtown. It's a community center where adults who have
experienced mental illness can join for free as members for pre-vocational training, paid employment
opportunities, educational support, and enriching activities. When I was first introduced to GAC for this project by Milwaukee Downtown BID #21 I was moved by the sense of community there and the way they help members to participate as part of the larger whole that is our city. Its an honor to work with them to create this mural because I want to be a part of that!
While GAC is well known in mental health circles, I believe its an asset our city as a whole can benefit from knowing more about because it recognizes while every person has unique needs, we all have something of value to contribute to our community.
In November 2021 GAC colleagues, volunteers and I began creating a large-scale mural for the outside of their building in Milwaukee's downtown. Members collaborated during two design workshops to share perspectives on themes ranging from common challenges in their community such as isolation and self-doubt; to different ways of support, care, and other ways to help make those better; and what a brighter day those choices can bring. Then we all participated in painting the mural together; first with solid colors, then a team of more experienced artists worked with me to do finishing touches. I spent most of the time painting details in facial expressions and people to help give the story more life and definition.
