Student's work from first two weeks; binding with needle and thread |
Kate pfeiffer-Sloan, education coordinator at Woodland Pattern, is collaborating with me during the residency on a poetry and writing component with the students. Our pages will be art-filled and poetry-filled cover to cover!
Each student will take his/her book home at the end. Each of the 8 students will pick their favorite spread and I will compile those into a real published Shutterfly 8"x8" photo book that the class can take home as a gift containing each of their classmates work.
There are also challenges that come with doing any kind of classroom work. We take 15-20 minutes at the beginning of each class to honor time for getting to know each other in a circle process, using a talking-piece, and sharing stories. We are working really hard on taking turns with the talking piece and respecting it so that everyone can be heard. Indeed, I notice the feelings shift when everyone feels safe in the room. I am stressing that this book is a reflection of who they are and that can only come through if their best selves can come out with each other. Kate and I try to facilitate that as much as possible by listening to them and allowing space for them to be heard and to hear each other. Kate has been a great co-facilitator, a great listener. I really like working with her; first time I've been able to do a residency where another teacher takes active part in the circle process and allows space for it.
We are having so much fun watching the beautiful work come together (inside and outside work)! Above are some of the students work from the last two weeks. Stay tuned for more photos and updates as we progress!
